Why a Nine-pack? A 6' x 4' surface with 2" hexes running along the Long edge has 27 hexes in a 60deg. offset to the 'grain' of the hexes. With a Nine-pack, the canal can occupy a corner of the playing area. Two Nine-packs will cover even more area, ultimately the canal can cross the center line of the playing area with three Nine-packs.
